Spring Lawn Revival: Dethatching, Seeding, and Fertilization Tips

Spring is in full swing in Minnesota, bringing longer days, warmer temperatures, and the return of vibrant life. Just like trees and flowers, your lawn is ready to emerge from its winter dormancy. Now is the perfect time to give it the attention it needs to thrive in the months ahead. With these dethatching, seeding, and fertilization tips, you can revive your grass and set the stage for a lush, healthy lawn all season long.

Dethatching is the process of removing dead grass, decomposing leaves, and other organic matter from the base of your lawn. It allows water and fertilizer to get down into the grass’s root system, keeping grass lush and healthy.

Dethatching tips:

  • Mow your lawn short before dethatching.
  • Water your lawn a day or two before dethatching.
  • Decide which method is right for you: a manual rake, a power rake, or a verticutter.
  • Pick up sticks and other lawn debris so it doesn’t clog your tools.
  • Go over the lawn from both directions for maximum thatch removal.
  • Pick up thatch afterward instead of letting it decompose on your lawn.
  • Water your lawn thoroughly after dethatching.

Seeding is the process of planting grass seed in new spaces or in bare or thin areas to promote a thick, lush lawn. It also boosts lawn density, which crowds out weeds and can enhance the curb appeal of your property.

Seeding tips:

  • Select high-quality grass seed that’s appropriate for your climate. Consider a grass seed blend that’s good for a range of conditions (sun, shade, drought, etc.) to increase its hardiness and adaptability.
  • Seed in early spring so grass has time to get established in the cooler weather.
  • Rake grass before seeding to maximize seed-to-soil contact.
  • Level out any low spots on your lawn before seeding to create a smooth, level surface.
  • Apply seed according to the coverage specifications on the bag.
  • Water after seeding and water daily until seeds germinate. After germination, water less frequently but more deeply to encourage root growth.

Fertilization is the process of spreading liquid or granular nutrients on your lawn to boost its overall health. More specifically, lawn fertilization kickstarts spring lawn growth, helps grass establish a deep, healthy root system, and girds it against the blistering summer heat.

Fertilization tips:

  • Test the pH of your soil and choose the best fertilizer accordingly.
  • Choose a slow-release granular fertilizer over a liquid fertilizer for longer-lasting benefits.
  • If you fertilize after seeding, choose a starter fertilizer that’s high in phosphorus to help roots get established.
  • Water your lawn after fertilizing to help the nutrients absorb into the soil and keep grass from “burning” from its intensity.
  • Don’t fertilize when the threat of heavy rain looms. Too much rain can cause the fertilizer to wash away before it gets absorbed into the soil.
